Our Burberry expertise

History & brand DNA

Thomas Burberry founded his house in 1856 in Basingstoke, England, at the age of 21. In 1879, he developed gabardine, a waterproof yet breathable cloth, patented in 1888, which would give rise to the trench coat. The check pattern appeared in the 1920s, first as the lining of these coats, before becoming the house's signature. In watchmaking, Burberry entrusted its watches to the American group Fossil under licence from 2002: Swiss Made watches, made in Switzerland, including The Britain line launched in 2012. In January 2016, the house announced it was leaving watchmaking; the licence ended in 2017. The Burberry watches we offer are therefore discontinued stock, new and authentic, which will not be reissued.

Iconic models

The City accounts for most of our sales: a 38 mm round case, a dial stamped with the raised check pattern, on a steel bracelet with check-engraved links or check canvas. In yellow gold, it is the Burberry our customers choose most often. The Classic is recognised by its applied 12 and, in 40 mm, its small seconds at 6 o'clock. The Heritage line plays with leather and check canvas on the 38 mm round watch. The Britain, the most watchmaker-like of the range, has a cushion case screwed at the four corners and, in the women's version, a rose or mother-of-pearl dial, sometimes set with crystals. A few narrow rectangular watches on check canvas complete the women's collection, and 42 mm chronographs the men's collection.

What we check before dispatch

Three guidelines for choosing well. First, size: the 38 mm The City is our best-selling size, for women and men alike; the 34 mm and 26 mm are more understated, The Classic goes up to 40 mm and the chronographs to 42 mm. Next, colour: yellow gold sells fastest for women, steel and anthracite grey for men; two-tone and rose gold serve as accents. Finally, use: our Burberry watches are quartz and Swiss Made, most are water resistant to 50 metres (5 ATM), and a few models are rated to 30 metres (3 ATM), mostly on leather or canvas. Rare for a fashion brand, the great majority have a sapphire crystal, which is more scratch resistant than a mineral crystal. To recognise a genuine Burberry, check the sharpness of the BURBERRY lettering on the dial, the words SWISS MADE on either side of the 6 o'clock index and, on The City, the regularity of the stamped check pattern.

Why buy at outlet prices?

A Burberry bought from us is new, authentic, checked before dispatch and covered by a 2-year warranty, at outlet prices. As the house has left watchmaking, these watches are no longer produced: that is what explains the reduced price, not a fault. A Swiss Made watch with a sapphire crystal, signed by a British house founded in 1856; if you are undecided, start with the 38 mm The City.

Frequently asked questions: Burberry

+Who made Burberry watches?
The American group Fossil, under licence from Burberry, from 2002: Swiss Made watches, made in Switzerland. In January 2016, Burberry announced it was leaving watchmaking and would not renew this licence, which ended in 2017. Our Burberry watches are discontinued stock from that period, new and authentic.
+Does Burberry still make watches?
No. Since the licence ended in 2017, the house no longer produces watches, and the models we offer will not be reissued. When a reference sells out with us, it is rarely restocked: if a model appeals to you, it is best not to wait.
+Which Burberry watch size should I choose?
The 38 mm The City is our best-selling size, worn by women and men alike. For a slim wrist, The City is also available in 34 mm and 26 mm; The Classic goes up to 40 mm, and men's chronographs to 42 mm.
+Do Burberry watches have a sapphire crystal?
Yes, the great majority do: this is rare for a fashion brand, and our study of watch crystals confirms that Burberry is the only fashion brand to do so almost systematically. Sapphire resists scratches far better than a mineral crystal. A few models have a mineral crystal: each product page states this.
+Are Burberry watches water resistant?
Most of our Burberry watches are water resistant to 50 metres (5 ATM): rain, washing hands and brief swimming, but not diving. A few models, mostly on leather or check canvas, are rated to 30 metres (3 ATM). Avoid hot showers and saunas, and keep a leather or canvas strap away from water.
