The ceramic watch: high-tech material on your wrist

The ceramic watch has nothing to do with the crockery in our kitchens. It is a technical ceramic, obtained by sintering compressed zirconium dioxide (zirconia) powder and then firing it at over 1,400°C, before being machined with diamond and polished. The result is a material of exceptional hardness, around 1,200 vickers, roughly seven times that of stainless steel. In practical terms, on your wrist, this translates to a surface that barely scratches in everyday use and retains its lustre for years to come.

Ceramic, steel or titanium: what really sets them apart

Against stainless steel, ceramic wins on scratch resistance and thermal comfort: it quickly takes on the temperature of the skin and never gives that cold sensation of steel on waking. Titanium, meanwhile, remains unbeatable in lightness and shock resistance, but scratches more easily than ceramic. The real trade-off comes down to this: ceramic is the material for flawless appearance over time (colour throughout the mass, never a plating that chips away), at the cost of greater sensitivity to violent impacts. A ceramic watch won't scratch against a car door, but a head-on collision with a hard edge can chip it, whereas steel would simply show a mark.

White or black: the colour runs through the material

The great strength of watchmaking ceramic lies in an invisible detail: the tint is present throughout the entire thickness of the material, not just on the surface. A white ceramic watch will remain pure white even in the event of a micro-scratch, unlike a painted or plated case that would reveal the metal underneath. The same logic applies to black ceramic, deep and satin-finished, which never turns grey with wear. This is why ceramic watches retain their like-new appearance far longer than standard gold-plated or lacquered finishes.

Caring for a ceramic watch

Maintenance is remarkably simple: ceramic is hypoallergenic (it causes no skin reaction, a real advantage for sensitive skin), impervious to cosmetics, perfumes and perspiration that tarnish plated metals. A simple wipe with a damp microfibre cloth is enough to restore its shine. The only habit to keep: protect it from direct impacts on the edges and avoid dropping it on tiles. Stored in its case between wears, a ceramic watch will pass through the years without a mark.
