Question 1

How do I care for a leather watch strap?

Accepted Answer

Protect it from water and prolonged perspiration, which harden and warp leather. Remove the watch before showering, sport or in high heat. Clean with a dry cloth; for smooth leather, a nourishing cream specifically designed for leather every few months preserves suppleness. Store the watch away from moisture. Well maintained, a quality leather strap lasts several years.

Question 2

Can I wear a leather watch every day?

Accepted Answer

Yes, provided you protect it from water. Leather is perfect for daily use at the office or in town, where it adds a formal touch. For sport, swimming or a very humid environment, a silicone or stainless steel strap is more suitable. Grained leather resists daily marks better than smooth leather, which is more delicate but more elegant.

Question 3

What colour leather strap should I choose?

Accepted Answer

Black is the most versatile and most formal, ideal with a dark or silver dial and a suit. Brown (from cognac to chocolate) warms light and gold dials and brings a more casual or vintage feel. For a single watch, black covers the most occasions; to complement a collection, brown adds warmth. Since leather straps are easily replaced, you can vary according to your outfit.

Question 4

How do I change a leather watch strap?

Accepted Answer

Most leather watches use spring bars between the lugs of the case. With an inexpensive spring bar tool, you compress the spring to release the old strap and clip on the new one. Check the lug width (in mm, shown on the product sheet or measurable) to choose a compatible strap. This is a simple operation that allows you to refresh the watch's style with minimal effort.

Question 5

Does leather develop a patina over time?

Accepted Answer

Quality full-grain leather develops a beautiful patina with wear: the colour becomes more nuanced, the surface softens and gains character. This is sought after on cognac and brown leathers. Reconstituted leather, on the other hand, does not patina and tends to crack. To encourage harmonious patina development, avoid water and nourish the leather occasionally.
