Question 1

Is a silver men's watch made of solid silver?

Accepted Answer

No: the cases are made of polished 316L stainless steel, which looks identical to polished silver. Solid 925 silver is too soft for watchmaking: it scratches, becomes dull and tarnishes with use. Steel provides the same cold lustre with far superior hardness, no oxidation and virtually no maintenance.

Question 2

How do you recognise a quality silver dial?

Accepted Answer

Look for the sunburst (circular striations that bring light to life) and especially applied indices, positioned in relief on the dial rather than printed. On a low-contrast silver background, this relief is what guarantees legibility. Faceted hands, which alternate bright and dark faces depending on the angle, complete a careful finish.

Question 3

Silver men's watch: link bracelet or Milanese mesh?

Accepted Answer

Steel links give the most robust and stately character, perfect for everyday wear. Milanese mesh, more supple and finer, pulls the watch towards retro elegance and slips better under a shirt cuff. A matter of style rather than quality: favour solid links, which are heavier, over folded links.

Question 4

Does the silver men's watch go with everything?

Accepted Answer

It is the most neutral tone in watchmaking: it accompanies suit, shirt and jeans without ever imposing a register, unlike gold (statement) or black (sporty). A silver men's watch with a black or blue dial is probably the most versatile piece one can own as a first watch.

Question 5

Can a scratch on a silver watch be repaired?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and this is a unique advantage of bare steel: professional polishing erases usage scratches from the case and bracelet, which is impossible on a black or gold PVD coating (the coloured layer would come off). Between polishings, a microfibre cloth is sufficient. It is the tone that ages best over time.
