History & brand DNA

Fossil was founded in 1984 in Dallas, Texas. Tom Kartsotis set up Overseas Products International, the future Fossil, had a first batch of watches made and sold them to the city's department stores. Together with stylist Lynne Stafford, he designed watches inspired by the 1930s to 1950s, drawing on advertisements from old Life, Look and Time magazines. From 1989, watches were delivered in decorated metal boxes, which reinforced this taste for nostalgia. Floated on the stock market in 1993, the company is now called Fossil Group and is headquartered in Richardson, Texas. It also owns Skagen, Michele and Zodiac, and manufactures Michael Kors, Emporio Armani, Armani Exchange and Diesel watches under licence. At Montres Outlet, Fossil has two main audiences: chronographs and automatics for men, and the Georgia and Boyfriend for women.

Iconic models

For men, three lines account for most of our sales. The Grant, the house's signature chronograph with Roman numerals and three subdials, leads the way, in leather or steel. The Machine features an industrial-style case in steel or all-black, while the Townsman, in its automatic version, shows its movement through an openworked dial. It is our men's line that sells fastest, model by model. The Neutra and the Everett complement these with more understated chronographs, and the Coachman keeps its leather cuff bracelet. For women, the Original Boyfriend, a 38 mm leather chronograph, is our most ordered Fossil women's watch. The Georgia, a small 32 mm case on fine riveted leather, is the one that sells fastest relative to the number of models. The Jacqueline displays Roman numerals across a 36 mm dial, and the Raquel has a rectangular case.

What we check before dispatch

Three pointers to help you choose. Size first: for men, the 44 mm of the Grant, Neutra and Coachman accounts for most of our sales. The 42 mm Machine FS4682 suits slimmer wrists, the Townsman automatic ME3181 measures 48 mm and the Nate 50 mm. For women, the Georgia (32 mm) and the Boyfriend (38 mm) sell better than the 36 mm dials, even though the latter are the most numerous. Next, material: for women, leather models sell noticeably faster than steel ones. For men, leather and steel are evenly matched, and black and gunmetal sell faster than steel. Finally, movement: most of our Fossil watches are quartz. The automatic Townsman, Neutra Automatic and Boyfriend let you see their mechanism through an openworked dial, and the ME3111 also has an exhibition caseback. Most are water-resistant to 50 metres (5 ATM). The Machine FS4682, Coachman and Cecile models are rated to 100 metres (10 ATM), and most Jacqueline models are limited to 30 metres (3 ATM). To spot a genuine Fossil, check the sharpness of the FOSSIL name on the dial and on the engraved buckle. On the Georgia, the model reference and the Genuine Leather mention are stamped on the back of the strap.

+Automatic or quartz: which should I choose from Fossil?

A quartz watch runs on a battery and needs very little attention. An automatic is wound by the movements of your wrist: it stops if you do not wear it for a few days, and you then simply reset the time. With us, Fossil automatics are mainly men's watches (Townsman, Neutra Automatic, FB-01, Heritage, Bronson Automatic). For women, the skeleton Boyfriend and the Rye Automatic are available, and their openworked dials let you see the mechanism.

+Are Fossil watches water-resistant?

Most of our Fossil watches are water-resistant to 50 metres (5 ATM), suitable for rain, washing hands and brief swimming, but not diving. The Machine FS4682, Coachman, Cecile, FB-01 and Blue Dive are rated to 100 metres (10 ATM) and are better suited to swimming, while most Jacqueline models are limited to 30 metres (3 ATM). In all cases, avoid hot showers and saunas, and do not operate the crown underwater.
