Question 1

What is a chronograph watch?

Accepted Answer

A chronograph watch is an analogue watch fitted with a timing function independent of the time display. It is recognised by its pushers and subdials that total the measured seconds, minutes and sometimes hours. You use it to measure a precise duration, such as a race time or cooking time. The chrono function activates and resets to zero without ever disrupting the normal running of the watch.

Question 2

How do you use the pushers on a chronograph?

Accepted Answer

The upper pusher controls the start and then stop of the measurement: a first press launches the central hand, a second press stops it. The lower pusher ensures reset to zero once the measurement is stopped. This start-stop-reset sequence is identical on virtually all models. Never force the reset whilst the chrono is running.

Question 3

Chronograph or chronometer: what is the difference?

Accepted Answer

The chronograph designates a function, that of measuring times using counters. The chronometer designates a precision certification, often issued by the COSC after rigorous testing. A watch can therefore be a chronograph without being a chronometer, and a chronometer watch may possess no chrono function at all. The two concepts are complementary but entirely distinct.

Question 4

What is the tachymetre scale for?

Accepted Answer

The tachymetre scale allows you to calculate an average speed based on a time measured over a known distance, typically a kilometre or mile. You start the chrono at the beginning of the route, stop it at the end, and the hand indicates the speed on the graduated bezel. It is a direct legacy of pilot and racing car watches. Today it remains primarily a highly appreciated aesthetic element.

Question 5

Quartz or automatic chronograph?

Accepted Answer

The quartz prioritises precision, lightness and minimal maintenance, ideal for intensive daily use. The automatic offers the pleasure of a mechanical movement powered by wrist motion, with superior horological value. The choice depends on your attachment to mechanics and how frequently you wear the watch. Both options deliver the same chrono function, only the power source differs.
