The men's grey watch, the alternative to black
Grey remains an uncommon dial colour: fewer than one men's watch in ten in our catalogue features it, well behind black and blue. That is precisely what makes a men's grey watch interesting: as understated as a black dial, it looks less harsh and catches the light more. Our selection brings together Hugo Boss, Diesel, Emporio Armani, Tommy Hilfiger, Lotus, Festina, Casio, Fossil, Skagen and Maserati, in new models with a 2-year warranty.
What sets a grey men's watch apart, measured across our catalogue
We compared grey dials against all of our men's watches. First difference, tone on tone: more than a quarter of grey-dial watches also have a grey case, and a third a grey strap, two shades that remain marginal across the rest of our men's watches. Grey begets grey.
Second difference, the chronograph: it features in almost one grey watch in three, compared with fewer than one in four elsewhere. Conversely, 10 ATM water resistance is slightly less common here, on around one watch in six compared with more than one in five overall. The size is unchanged: a median diameter of 44 mm, 12 mm thickness and a 22 mm strap, like the average of our men's watches. The material split is the same too: steel leads, with leather on around a quarter of models.
Light grey, anthracite, slate: what our listings say
In watchmaking, the word "grey" covers a broad range, from pearl grey that is almost silver to anthracite close to black, passing through slate grey with a slight blue tint. Our listings do not make this distinction: all these dials are classed as "grey". Rely on the photos of each product to judge the shade, bearing in mind that a sunburst dial changes tone depending on the angle of the light. If you are unsure about a very light dial, compare with our selection of men's silver watches.
Pairing grey dial, case and strap
Three combinations recur in the selection. Tone on tone, grey dial, case and strap, gives a very contemporary and discreet watch. Polished silver steel, on around a quarter of straps, remains the safe choice: it lifts a dark dial. Finally, a brown or black leather strap warms up a cool grey and goes well with a grey or navy suit. A few rose gold or gilded cases create a more pronounced contrast.
Grey goes with almost everything in a wardrobe, which makes it a good choice for a single watch. If you are looking for a bolder colour, also see our selections of men's blue watches and men's green watches.
Water resistance and everyday use
Most grey-dial watches are water-resistant to 5 ATM: occasional showering, but not swimming. Around one in six reaches 10 ATM, the rating that covers swimming pools, sea and light snorkelling, and nearly one in five stops at 3 ATM, suitable for rain and hand washing. Keep the crown always pushed in, and avoid saunas and hammams.
