316L, solid links, thickness: reading the quality of a steel bracelet

The watchmaking standard is stainless steel 316L, known as surgical steel: its molybdenum content makes it corrosion-resistant and hypoallergenic. The real hierarchy then plays out in the links: solid links, machined from the solid, give a heavy, silent and durable bracelet; folded links, stamped sheet metal, are lighter, noisier and stretch over the years. The test is immediate: weigh it. On a quality men's steel watch bracelet, the metal has weight and bends without clicking; this is what distinguishes a true men's steel watch from a light imitation.

One last marker: link screws (lasting adjustment at the watchmaker) are better than friction pins on budget bracelets.

Adjusting and maintaining a steel bracelet

A link bracelet is adjusted by removing links (pins or screws): allow one finger's play between bracelet and wrist, the watch should pivot slightly without slipping on the hand. Maintenance is minimal: soapy water and soft brush between the links twice a year, microfibre cloth daily. A scratch on bare steel polishes out; it is the only bracelet that can be maintained indefinitely.
