Question 1

Can you swim with a women's water-resistant watch rated 10 ATM?

Accepted Answer

Yes: 10 ATM covers the pool, the sea and light snorkelling, with the crown pushed in or screwed down. For recreational diving, 20 ATM and the Diver's marking are required. Rinse the watch with fresh water after exposure to salt or chlorine.

Question 2

Is a women's water-resistant watch rated 5 ATM enough for the pool?

Accepted Answer

No. At 5 ATM, the watch withstands an occasional shower, not the pool. This is why this selection starts at 10 ATM. For swimming, even occasionally, this is the threshold to aim for.

Question 3

Can you wear a water-resistant watch in a sauna or hammam?

Accepted Answer

No, never. Heat expands the seals and steam can seep into the case, whatever the rating. Also remove your watch before a very hot bath.

Question 4

Does the warranty cover water resistance?

Accepted Answer

No. Our watches carry a 2-year warranty, but water resistance depends on the condition of the seals and on use: it is not part of the warranty. Have it checked by a watchmaker regularly, and always after the case has been opened.

Question 5

Why are women's water-resistant watches larger?

Accepted Answer

In our selection, they measure 39 mm in median diameter and 12 mm in thickness, compared with 36 and 8 mm for our other women's watches. One in five has a chronograph and more than one in two has a date, two functions that require space. A quarter of the models still measure 38 mm or less. For men's models, see our men's water-resistant watch.
