Our Citizen expertise
History & brand DNA
Citizen was founded in Tokyo in 1918 under the name Shokosha Watch Research Institute. In 1924, its first pocket watch was named CITIZEN, a name chosen by Tokyo mayor Shinpei Goto, who wanted a watch that would win the hearts of the citizens. The name became the company's own in 1930 as Citizen Watch Co. Citizen describes itself as a true manufacture, controlling every stage of production from component development to final assembly. Its movements are also sold to other watchmakers under the Miyota brand, named after a town in Nagano Prefecture. The house is best known for Eco-Drive, its patented technology for watches recharged by light, whose ancestor, the Crystron Solar Cell of 1976, was the first analogue quartz watch with a rechargeable solar battery. At Montres Outlet, however, Citizen is first and foremost about automatics: the Tsuyosa, launched in 2022, whose name means 'strength' in Japanese, and its variants.
Iconic models
Three families make up our Citizen selection, all automatic. The Tsuyosa is by far our most requested model: a 40 mm case extended by an integrated steel bracelet, a crown at 4 o'clock, a sapphire crystal with a magnifier over the date, the Citizen 8210 automatic calibre and a sunburst dial in a genuine range of colours, from glacier blue to red, green and champagne. It is also available with a camouflage dial, in all-black, in rose gold and in two-tone. The Tsuyosa Small Second (NK5010) keeps the same case but replaces the date with a small seconds subdial at 6 o'clock, on a textured dial, with the 8322 calibre and its 60-hour power reserve. Finally, our 43 mm sport automatics add a graduated rotating bezel and round indices, on steel, leather or silicone. Eco-Drive, the technology that built Citizen's reputation, appears only occasionally in our range.
What we check before dispatch
Size: all our Tsuyosa models measure 40 mm, a diameter that suits most wrists, and their integrated bracelet extends the case seamlessly. The sport automatics, at 43 mm including their bezel, wear larger. Colour: at our store, people choose a Tsuyosa for its colour. Blue dials, from glacier blue to teal, are our best sellers, and red, orange and yellow sell fastest when compared model for model. Use: Citizen rates the Tsuyosa water-resistant to 50 metres, suitable for swimming in calm water but not for diving. Our sport automatics are listed at 100 metres on our product sheets. These are automatic watches: when worn, they wind themselves, and when left unworn for more than about 42 hours (60 hours for the Small Second), they stop and restart with a turn of the crown. To read a reference: the two letters and four digits identify the model (NJ0150, NJ0151 or NJ0158 for the Tsuyosa, NK5010 for the Small Second). After the hyphen, a first digit of 0 or 1 indicates a leather or silicone strap, while 5 or 8 indicates a metal bracelet. The final letter E denotes a black dial, A white, L blue and H grey. To recognise a genuine Tsuyosa: the crispness of the CITIZEN signature below 12 o'clock, the magnifier over the date, the crown at 4 o'clock and the transparent caseback that reveals the calibre.
Why buy at outlet prices?
A Citizen bought from us is new, authentic, checked before dispatch and covered by a 2-year warranty, at outlet prices. It is the watch for anyone who wants a genuine automatic movement and a sapphire crystal without aiming for the high end, with a colour that gets noticed. If you're undecided, start with the colour: the Tsuyosa comes in almost every shade.
