Our Swatch expertise

History & brand DNA

Swatch was launched in 1983 by Nicolas Hayek to save Swiss watchmaking in the face of the Japanese quartz wave (Seiko, Citizen, Casio) that threatened the Swiss industry. The gamble: a Swiss watch at an accessible price, with a certified Swiss quartz movement in a high-tech plastic case, and a design renewed each season like a fashion accessory. Success was immediate, with over 500 million Swatch watches sold to date. The brand belongs to the Swatch Group, the world's leading watchmaker, which also owns Omega, Longines, Tissot and Breguet.

Iconic models

The Swatch range is divided into five main collections: Originals (Gent), the historic 34 mm plastic range with Swiss quartz movement in 2 or 3-hand versions, the instantly recognisable classic; Skin, an ultra-thin 3.9 mm version; Irony, metal case (stainless steel or aluminium) with the same movements as the Originals; Big Bold, an oversized 47 mm range with colourful graphic dials; and special editions (MoonSwatch x Omega, artist collaborations) that sell out quickly. Available in all sizes and styles, unisex by default.

What we check before dispatch

On an authentic Swatch: the 'SWISS MADE' inscription must appear on the dial at 6 o'clock, engraved and not printed. The Swatch logo is in characteristic bold serif typography. The case back bears the reference (often GW or GB for Originals, SUOK for Irony, etc.) and the inscription 'Swiss Made, Stainless Steel back' (Originals) or 'Stainless Steel' (Irony). The plastic strap on Originals is integrated into the case, it does not come off like a conventional strap. The crown is marked with the Swiss cross or the S logo. Beware of counterfeit MoonSwatch models that proliferate on marketplaces, always verify the Bioceramic colours and inscriptions.

Why buy at outlet prices?

Swatch outlet prices range from 40 to 180 EUR for standard collections, up to 350 EUR for rare special editions (versus 70-300 EUR in boutiques). It is the only purchase at this price that guarantees certified Swiss Made. Particularly recommended for: a first Swiss watch purchase, a gift for a teenager or young adult, light 'beach watch' use and durability (Originals at 30 g are barely noticeable on the wrist), or collecting special editions (resale potential).

Frequently asked questions: Swatch

+Is Swatch really Swiss Made?
Yes, 100 per cent. All Swatch models are certified Swiss Made, with Swiss quartz movement (ETA, a Swatch Group subsidiary) and assembly in Switzerland in Bienne. This has been the brand's historical guarantee since 1983 and the reason for its existence.
+Why is the MoonSwatch so sought after?
The MoonSwatch is a Swatch x Omega collaboration launched in 2022 that recreates the design of the Speedmaster Moonwatch (the watch worn by Apollo astronauts) in a Bioceramic case at 250 EUR instead of 7000 EUR. Commercial success has been enormous, with some sold-out models reselling above retail price. At Montres Outlet, MoonSwatch models arrive periodically, so keep an eye on new arrivals.
+Is a plastic Swatch watch durable?
Yes, the plastic used in Swatch Originals is a technical polymer (Bioceramic on recent models) that is particularly resistant to impact. The advantage of this material over steel is no visible scratches with use and no marks after a knock. Water resistance is 30 m (3 ATM) standard on all models.
+How do you change a Swatch battery?
The Swatch quartz movement requires a battery change every 2 to 3 years. The case back is a push-fit on most models, the operation should be carried out by a watchmaker to preserve water resistance. Indicative cost: 10 to 25 EUR. Our after-sales service can handle the operation.
