Question 1

Does a men's automatic watch work without a battery?

Accepted Answer

Yes, completely. The movement is mechanical: a rotor pivots with the gestures of the wrist and winds the spring that powers the watch. No battery, ever. Worn every day, it does not stop. After a pause, manual winding via the crown and a time adjustment are enough to restart it.

Question 2

What power reserve should I choose?

Accepted Answer

A power reserve of 40 hours is suitable for daily wear during the week. If you alternate between several watches or remove it often, aim for a power reserve of 60 to 70 hours or invest in an automatic winder. This avoids having to reset the date and time each time you restart it, especially on models with complications. The exact power reserve is listed in the specifications of each product page.

Question 3

What is a skeleton or open heart dial?

Accepted Answer

An open heart dial has an opening that lets you see part of the movement (often the balance wheel) in action. A skeleton dial goes further by revealing the entire mechanism. Highly sought after on men's automatics, they showcase the mechanics, the heart of the appeal of this type of watch. Many models also add a transparent caseback.

Question 4

What diameter for a men's automatic watch?

Accepted Answer

Men's automatics often fall between 40 and 45 mm, as the mechanical movement requires more space than a quartz movement. A larger wrist can carry a 44 to 45 mm; a smaller wrist will prefer 40 to 42 mm. Also consider thickness: an automatic is generally thicker than a quartz, a point to check for wearing under a shirt sleeve.

Question 5

Is an automatic watch a good investment?

Accepted Answer

An automatic from an established brand can be serviced and passed down over decades, whereas a quartz movement is replaced. In terms of use, it is a durable object that stands the test of time with regular maintenance. Financially, only certain collector references gain in value: most watches are a pleasure to use rather than an investment. The real return is mechanical and aesthetic.
