We compared every Fossil automatic men's watch with our full range of Fossil men's watches. The clearest gap concerns complications: none has a chronograph, whereas one Fossil men's watch in three has one, and none displays the date, compared with two in five for the rest of the brand. The dial remains clean, focused on the time.

The strap also differs. Steel features on almost two automatics in three, whereas leather slightly dominates across our Fossil men's watches as a whole. The blue dial is more common, around one in three against one in five. Finally, sapphire crystal, almost absent from the rest of the brand, appears on a small share of the automatics. A Fossil automatic men's watch is chosen for the pleasure of mechanics: a sweeping seconds hand, no battery, a watch that lives alongside you. On the other hand, it gains or loses a few seconds a day and stops if left in a drawer for several days; you then simply put it back on your wrist and set the time. Water resistance and everyday use: an automatic for the city

The great majority of our Fossil automatic watches are water resistant to 5 ATM: rain, handwashing and occasional showering, but not swimming pools. A minority reach 10 ATM, the rating that covers swimming pools, the sea and light snorkelling. On this point, the automatics match the rest of the brand exactly. A Fossil automatic men's watch rated at 5 ATM should therefore be removed before swimming. Always keep the crown pushed in, and never wear it in a sauna or hammam.
