History & brand DNA
Citizen was founded in 1930 in Tokyo under the name Shokosha Watch Research Institute. The name 'Citizen' was chosen to symbolise a watch for all citizens, at an accessible price. In 1976, Citizen launched Eco-Drive: a technology that stores light energy in a photovoltaic cell, eliminating the need for a battery. This patent revolutionised solar watchmaking. Since then, over 100 million Eco-Drive watches have been sold. In 2018, Citizen acquired Frederique Constant and Alpina, whilst maintaining its accessible positioning.
Iconic models
Major collections: Eco-Drive Classic (versatile entry-level range, E168 movement), Promaster (diving, aviation, sport, the Marine BN series is ISO 6425 certified), Attesa (antimagnetic, Super Titanium, lightweight and hypoallergenic), Campanola (complications, reserved for the Japanese market), Satellite Wave (worldwide GPS synchronisation). What we check before dispatch
Citizen authentication checkpoints: the ECO-DRIVE pictogram (stylised leaf) on the dial indicates solar technology. Expose the watch to light before purchase to verify it works, an Eco-Drive in complete discharge may take 2-3 hours of direct light to restart. Super Titanium (Attesa range) is recognisable by its lightness and slightly greyish hue. Check the crown on Promaster diving models (it must remain locked).
