Diesel Mega Chief DZ4423: sunburst blue on brushed steel

The Diesel Mega Chief DZ4423 men's watch combines three materials that complement one another: a silver-tone steel case with alternating brushed and polished surfaces, a sunburst blue dial that changes shade with the light, and a black leather strap. The result is an imposing chronograph, yet more versatile than most oversized watches. What you need to know:

• Case: brushed and polished silver-tone steel, round, 51 x 59 mm with a 12 mm thickness, with crown guard.
• Dial: sunburst blue, with reflections radiating from the centre.
• Movement: quartz chronograph with date.
• Glass: mineral, robust against everyday knocks.
• Strap: black leather, fastened with a pin buckle.
• Water resistance: 100 metres (10 ATM), enough to withstand rain and surface swimming without concern for the case.

A 10 ATM chronograph designed for movement

The Mega Chief takes its name from its generous case size. The crown guard surrounds the crown to shield it from lateral impacts, a feature inherited from tool watches that also reinforces the military look of the case.

• Chronograph: start, stop and reset via pushers, for timing a run, a journey or a cooking session.
• Date: completes the display for everyday use without a phone.
• 10 ATM: the case withstands heavy rain, splashes and surface swimming, provided the pushers are never operated underwater.
• Leather drawback: the leather strap does not like water. For swimming, it is best to replace it with a suitable strap.

Our advice: the case is ready for water, the leather is not. Keep the DZ4423 dry in daily wear and save its 10 ATM rating for the unexpected, a downpour or an unplanned dip. You will preserve the suppleness and colour of the black leather for much longer.

51 mm and black leather strap: getting the fit right

At 51 mm wide and 59 mm long, the Mega Chief remains a large watch, but it offers roughly 17% less surface area than a 56 mm case, making it noticeably easier to wear every day. Its 12 mm thickness allows it to slip under a loose shirt sleeve.

• Wrist of 16 to 17 cm: the watch clearly displays its size, a deliberate statement.
• Wrist of 17 to 19 cm: this is the balance zone, where the 51 mm finds its proportions.
• Wrist over 19 cm: the case looks natural, almost understated.
• Pin buckle: adjustable hole by hole, without tools, to tighten or loosen with the seasons.

The black leather gradually moulds to the wrist. In the first few days it may feel a little stiff; after a few weeks of wear, it conforms to the curve of the wrist and becomes more comfortable. Avoid fastening it too tightly at first: leave room for a finger between the leather and the skin while it adapts to your wrist.

Leather and steel: a simple care routine

The DZ4423 combines two materials that require different care. The brushed and polished case needs little attention, while the leather needs a little more.

• Case: dry microfibre cloth, following the direction of the brushing to avoid creating crossed marks.
• Leather: avoid water, perfume and sun cream, which stain and dry it out.
• Drying: if the strap gets wet, let it dry flat, away from a radiator.
• Rest: alternating days of wear allows the leather to release moisture from perspiration.
• Glass: keep away from hard objects, which can scratch the mineral crystal.

Style notes: the sunburst blue works equally well with raw denim and a navy jumper as with a grey wool jacket. The black leather makes it suitable for the office, where a metal bracelet would have looked sportier.
